Sir Donald Francis Tovey was a British musical analyst, musicologist, writer on music, composer and pianist. He is best known for his Essays in Musical Analysis. Tovey began to study the piano and compose at an early age. He eventually studied music under Hubert Parry and became a close friend of Joseph Joachim, and played piano with the Joachim Quartet in a 1905 performance of Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quintet. He gained some moderate fame as a composer, having his works performed in Berlin and Vienna as well as London. He performed his own piano concerto under the conductorship of Henry Wood in 1903 and under Hans Richter in 1906. During this period he also contributed heavily to the music articles in the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, writing a large portion of the content on music of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1914 he began to teach music at the University of Edinburgh and there he founded the Reid Orchestra. For their concerts he wrote a series of programme notes, many of which were eventually collected into the books for which he is now best known, the Essays in Musical Analysis. Tovey’s most productive period as a composer was from his time as an undergraduate at Balliol College through his career as a concert pianist until he became Reid professor of Music at Edinburgh University in 1914. The majority of his compositions were for chamber music of which this CD of string quartets by the Tippett Quartet is the first in a series of Tovey’s music on Guild Music. Further Tovey recordings of his sonatas for solo violin, solo cello, double cello and cello and piano as well as piano trio, piano quartet and piano quintet will shortly be released on Guild Music. Tovey began to compose and perform less often later in life. In 1913 he composed a symphony, in 1935 he wrote a cello concerto for Pablo Casals and he also wrote an opera, The Bride of Dionysus. In illustrated radio talks recorded in his last few years, his playing can be heard to be severely affected by a problem with one of his hands. Tovey made several editions of other composers’ music and in 1931 produced a completion of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Die Kunst der Fuge. Tovey was knighted in 1935. He died in 1940 in Edinburg.

Ingram in particular wrote of their balancing “detail, tight rhythm, and emotional response without losing tonal focus or the long structural view,” and I second those views. Arnell’s Fifth Quartet notably never lets up in its technical and expressive demands, and these are met here with great success. I should also mention that the Tippett musicians are not only technically expert, but possess a sleek beauty of tone, though if these performances are anything to judge, they aren’t enslaved by it.

Excellent sound, and good liner notes. Definitely recommended.

Gramophone: Arnell String Quartets http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/reviews/gramophone-arnell-string-quartets http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/reviews/gramophone-arnell-string-quartets#comments Fri, 02 Dec 2011 15:17:30 +0000 tippett http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/?post_type=reviews&p=336 Suffice it to say, the Tippett Quartet perform with heaps of commitment and supreme technical accomplishment; indeed, it’s hard to imagine this repertoire receiving more eloquent and understanding advocacy. Robert Matthew-Walker’s exemplary notes and Michael Ponder’s glowingly real sound add further lustre to yet another strongly reccomendable from those enterprising folk at Dutton. Dont hesitate for a moment.

The first violin really sings in the high register and the cello is full-bodied and resonant when the music demands it. They play this Tovey quartet with a perfect blend of discipline and joy. The Guild recording, captured inside a church, uses the room’s natural reverberation perfectly, and delivers a rich and pliable sound that brings out the instruments qualities very well. Highly recommended for both the quality of the music of this unknown work, and for the recording itself. ]]> http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/reviews/tovey-classical-music-sentinel/feed 0 Tovey: International Record Review http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/reviews/tovey-international-record-review http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/reviews/tovey-international-record-review#comments Tue, 12 Jul 2011 09:48:22 +0000 tippett http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/?post_type=reviews&p=307 I’m sure these are not easy works for a quartet to bring off, but the members of the Tippett Quartet sound as if they’re really enjoying this meaty and affirmative music, and doing their utmost to present it as eloquently as possible. I very much hope they have been booked to do a follow-up disc of Tovey’s D minor Quartet, with the Piano Quintet and Gluck Variations. Highly recommended. ]]> http://www.tippettquartet.co.uk/reviews/tovey-international-record-review/feed 0
